Jade Martin ('Jadey')

How old were you when you first started gymnastics?

5 years old

What was your favourite part about doing gymnastics?

Initially Mum put me into gymnastics to try and burn some of my excess energy. I instantly loved the sport, I loved the variety, the challenges, the adrenaline and the friends that i was able to do it with. I don't think I could say there was one specific part that was my favourite, i loved it all!

What Gymsport did you do?

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

How long did you do gymnastics for?

13 years

What sport did you take up after gymnastics?

Skeleton (a winter Olympic Sport, like bobsledding but on your stomach going head first).

What did you find the biggest thing to adjust to when changing sports?

The different training styles! For skeleton you need ice, something that we dont have a lot of in Australia. When at home, we did weight and sprint training. Whilst away, we trained on the ice and in the gyms. We were limited to how much we were able to train each day due to the high G forces.

What do you like most about your current sport?

I've finished now, but it would have to have been the massive adrenaline rush and the speed!

Who is your sport idol and why?

Michael Phelps- he achieved so many amazing things and went on to achieve so many more. After his first Olympics, he would have been well within his rights to retire, he went on to win 27 Olympic medals before retiring! He was such a phenomenal and inspiring athlete.

What is your biggest accomplishment in your sport?

My first Australian Team, it was something that I worked so hard and long for, it was such a huge accomplishment and something I am still so proud of.

One question you get asked too often?

Can you do a flip? Can you teach me to flip?

How did gymnastics help you at your current sport?

As a gymnast you have so much strength and a really high strength to weight ratio, whilst the style of training was quite different I was lucky that I was strong and fast which helped to get selected to the Australian team. Having good form (legs together and straight, toes pointed) also meant I was nice and streamlined on the sled and helped me to go faster!

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

A tiger, its majestic yet fierce.
