Amanda Bisk ('Bisket')
How old were you when you first started gymnastics?
What was your favourite part about doing gymnastics?
Being able to learn new skills and tricks to do with my body.
What Gymsport did you do?
Women’s Artistic Gymnastics
How long did you do gymnastics for?
Until I was 18 so that would be 15 years.
What sport did you take up after gymnastics?
I took up High Jump and then moved to Pole Vault.
What did you find the biggest thing to adjust to when changing sports?
I missed how challenging and exciting training for gymnastics was. Gym always had new ways to challenge my body whereas, high jump focused on mastering one thing. When I started Pole Vaulting, it really filled that void because there was so many aspects of technique I had to master. We also had the chance to do one gymnastics session a week too!
What do you like most about your current sport?
Athletics, and in particular Pole Vault, is a sport very much focused on perfecting different physical skills. I love how challenging it is (just like gym) and how every training session during the week is different. I also love that you can train outdoors.
Who is your sport idol and why?
Roger Federer - he is the absolute image of sportsmanship and grace.
What is your biggest accomplishment in your sport?
Representing my country at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia in 2009 and at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
One question you get asked too often?
How tall am I? I'm 1.78 cms.....and I was always a tall gymnast!
How did gymnastics help you at your current sport?
It helped me so much with my confidence, co-ordination and persistence. Gym taught me to enjoy working hard and to have my focus on achieving all those little wins at training, rather than having all my focus on competition results. I also do yoga now and I am a qualified yoga teacher, so gymnastics has taught me a lot about learning new skills and how to teach them to my students, especially handstands!
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A monkey. They always look like they have heaps of fun and they are so good at climbing and swing from things!
